Why ESR-Refined Martensitic Stainless Steel Outperforms Conventional Melt

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) + LF + VOD

Primary steelmaking uses 30/50/60-tonne EAF and ladle furnace (LF) refining, followed by vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) to control carbon, sulphur, and dissolved gases. This sequence delivers the low residual-element chemistry demanded by aerospace and energy standards.

Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR)

Our 1–15 tonne ESR and 6/12/30-tonne pressure ESR (PESR) units re-melt ingots through a reactive slag that removes non-metallic inclusions and produces a directionally solidified, defect-free microstructure. ESR is mandatory for bearing-grade 440C and all turbine-blade grades.

Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) + VAR

0.5/1/3/8/12-tonne VIM furnaces produce ultra-clean heats free from nitrogen and hydrogen porosity. Followed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for the most demanding aerospace and medical specifications, achieving inclusion ratings per AMS 2300/2303.

GFM Precision Forging + Hydraulic Press

A 1,800/2,700-tonne GFM precision radial forging machine and 4,500/8,000-tonne hydraulic press provide controlled reduction ratios that refine grain structure, eliminate internal segregation, and achieve the forging quality required by ASTM A484 and EN 10250.

Heat Treatment — Full In-House Capability

Annealing, normalising, quenching (oil, water, or air), and multi-stage tempering are all performed in calibrated furnaces. Quench and temper parameters are logged per heat number, with thermocouple records available as part of the MTC package.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Chemical Analysis

100% ultrasonic testing per EN 10228-3 / ASTM A388, hardness verification across the cross-section, and optical emission spectrometry (OES) chemical analysis are performed on every batch before the MTC is issued. No material leaves without passing all acceptance criteria.

Martensitic Stainless Steel in Aerospace & Defense

Compressor blades, turbine discs, fasteners, actuator rods, and landing gear components in aircraft demand a steel that combines high specific strength with fatigue resistance and resistance to fuel or hydraulic fluid exposure. VIM+VAR-processed martensitic grades meet AMS and AS9100 traceability requirements.

Medical and Surgical Instruments

Scalpels, surgical scissors, biopsy forceps, dental curettes, and bone saws require a stainless steel that can be sharpened to a fine edge, autoclaved repeatedly without corrosion, and manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances. The 420 series delivers the combination of high hardness and adequate corrosion resistance for most instrument standards including ISO 7153-1.

Power Generation

EN 10204 Mill Test Certificate

A 3.1 MTC (certified by our works inspector) is issued as standard with every order. The certificate documents chemical composition (heat analysis + product analysis where applicable), mechanical test results, heat number, batch number, and heat treatment records. EN 10204 3.2 (countersigned by an independent inspection body) is available upon request.

Third-Party Inspection Partners

We maintain active working relationships with SGS, Bureau Veritas (BV), and TÜV for independent pre-shipment inspection. Full Heat and Batch Traceability

Every piece is linked back to a unique heat number and production batch. Heat treatment furnace charts, quench bath temperature records, tempering cycle records, and spectrometer printouts are archived for a minimum of 10 years. Retrospective traceability requests are processed within 48 hours.

Dimensional and Non-Destructive Testing

Dimensional inspection is performed to EN 10060 (round bar), EN 10058 (flat bar), or applicable ASTM dimensional standards. Ultrasonic testing (UT) per EN 10228-3 or ASTM A388 is standard for forged bars and blocks above 80 mm diameter. Surface hardness is verified after heat treatment across the cross-section.

Frequently Asked Questions About Martensitic Stainless Steel

Grade 410 (1.4006 / X12Cr13) is the lower-cost, general-purpose entry point of the martensitic family. It contains 11.5–13.5% chromium with minimal nickel, giving it moderate corrosion resistance adequate for mildly aggressive environments, good machinability, and weldability. Grade 431 (1.4057 / X17CrNi16-2) is an upgraded formulation that adds 1.5–2.5% nickel to a higher chromium base (15–17% Cr). The nickel substantially improves impact toughness at hardened conditions, increases corrosion resistance (notably in salt spray), and provides better performance in sour-service environments. Grade 431 is the correct choice for marine shafts, high-strength pump rods, and any application requiring NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance.
Every order ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) conforming to EN 10204 3.1 as standard. The MTC documents heat composition (including full spectrometer printout), mechanical test results (tensile, yield, elongation, hardness), the unique heat number, production batch number, and heat treatment records including furnace temperature charts. Where required, EN 10204 3.2 certification — signed by an independent third-party inspector such as SGS or Bureau Veritas — is available at a small surcharge. For aerospace orders, first-article inspection reports and compliance statements to AS9100 are also available. NACE MR0175 hardness compliance statements are issued on request for 1.4418 and 1.4313 grades.

For grades held in stock (typically 410, 420, 431, 440C in standard round bar sizes), lead time is 7–15 days from order confirmation, including MTC preparation and packing. For custom dimensions, specialty grades such as 1.4418, 1.4313, 616/SUH616, or ESR-quality material, lead time is within 30 calendar days from receipt of order confirmation and deposit. The minimum order quantity is 1 piece for stock items — there is no requirement to purchase a full bundle or coil if your project requires only a few bars. For dedicated custom production runs, the minimum is 3 tonnes.
Grade 440C provides good resistance to mild corrosive media — fresh water, mild acids, organic compounds — when in the fully hardened and tempered condition. However, for continuous seawater immersion, high-chloride process fluids, or sour-service environments containing dissolved H₂S, 440C is not the correct choice. The supermartensitic grades 1.4418 (X4CrNiMo16-5-1) and 1.4313 (X3CrNiMo13-4) are the engineered solutions for these environments. They offer a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) of approximately 18–22, compared with 440C's PRE of approximately 18–19 in the annealed condition, but critically they do so alongside superior toughness, stress-corrosion resistance, and weldability that 440C cannot match. The internationally approved grades for continuous service in steam turbine blades, rotor tie bolts, and high-temperature fasteners are Grade 616 (ASTM S42226 / EN 1.4935 / JIS SUH616), Grade 422 (S42200 / 1.4922), and 1.4923 (X22CrMoV12-1). These grades incorporate molybdenum, vanadium, and — in the case of 616 — tungsten, which together provide creep resistance, high-temperature tensile retention, and oxidation resistance up to approximately 580–620°C in continuous service. Each of these grades is governed by ASTM A565, EN 10088-3, or JIS G4311 and must be supplied in the quenched and tempered condition. We supply all three grades with full ASTM A565 or EN 10088-3 compliance documentation, including elevated-temperature tensile properties where specified.
