Weldability

50CrMo4 is not weldable and should therefore not be used in welded constructions.

Hot Forming

50CrMo4 is hot formed at temperatures between 1100°C and 850°C and should be cooled slowly afterward.

Note: These typical values apply to longitudinal specimens, which are taken from the core for diameters up to 25 mm, and from the edge zone with a distance of 12.5 mm from the edge for diameters over 25 mm. Different requirements can be considered upon request.

Heat Treatment Guidelines

Critical Temperatures: Ms: 300°C | AC1: 745°C | AC3: 775°C

Normalizing

  • Normalizing should be carried out at temperatures between 840°C and 880°C followed by air cooling.

Soft Annealing

  • Annealing is performed at temperatures of 680°C – 720°C followed by slow cooling.

Quenching and Tempering

  • Hardening takes place at temperatures of 820°C – 850°C followed by water quenching, or
  • Hardening at temperatures of 830°C – 860°C followed by quenching in oil or aqueous polymer solution with comparable quenching effect.
  • Tempering should be carried out at temperatures of 540°C – 680°C followed by air cooling.
