Alloy N06455 (C-4) — High-Performance Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium Alloy
Product Description
FUSHUN METAL’s Alloy N06455 (C-4) is an austenitic nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with low carbon, silicon, and iron content specifically designed for exceptional corrosion resistance in aggressive chemical environments. This versatile alloy exhibits a significantly lower tendency to form precipitates in the temperature range between 650 and 1,040°C (1,202-1,904°F), which substantially improves its resistance to inter-crystalline corrosion. When properly machined, no knife line attack occurs in the heat-affected zones of welded joints.
With its balanced chemical composition, Alloy N06455 delivers extraordinary resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, including contaminated reducing mineral acids. The high nickel concentration makes it practically immune to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, even in hot chloride solutions. This unique combination of properties makes Alloy N06455 the material of choice for demanding applications in chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and pollution control equipment.

Fabrication
Alloy N06455 (C-4) can be fabricated using conventional techniques with proper consideration for its properties:
Hot Forming
Can be hot-formed in the temperature range between 1,080 and 900°C (1,976 and 1,652°F) with subsequent rapid cooling in water or air. Heat treatment after hot forming is required to achieve optimal properties.
Cold Forming
The alloy has a higher work hardening rate than austenitic stainless steels, which must be considered when selecting forming tools and planning processes. Intermediate annealing is necessary for major cold forming work. For cold forming of > 15%, solution annealing must be performed.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing should be conducted at approximately 1,120°C (2,048°F). Cooling should be accelerated with water to achieve optimum corrosion properties. Fast air cooling can be performed for thicknesses less than 1.5 mm.
Machining
Machining should be performed in the solution-annealed condition. Due to the elevated work hardening rate compared to stainless steels, use lower cutting speeds and maintain continuous tool engagement. Adequate chip depth is important to cut below the previously formed strain-hardened zone.
Welding
Readily weldable using techniques similar to those for 300 series stainless steels. For optimal corrosion resistance, low heat input and proper filler metal selection are important. Preferred welding methods include GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG). Post-weld heat treatments are normally not required.
