Industry Applications for Special Austenitic Stainless Steel

These specialist grades are designed for environments where standard 304 or 316 fall short. Each application segment identifies the recommended grades and the critical performance advantage they deliver.

Aerospace & Defense

Nitronic 50 (XM-19)  ■  347H  ■  347HFG

High-strength Nitronic 50 is specified for aircraft fasteners, hydraulic actuator shafts, and cryogenic fuel handling where weight reduction and corrosion resistance are equally critical. Stabilized 347H and 347HFG supply combustion liner and exhaust duct components with the long-term creep life required by engine certification programs.

Chemical Processing & Petrochemicals

310MoLN  ■  316LN  ■  316Nb  ■  316LMo

310MoLN's ultra-low carbon and high Cr-Ni-Mo content handles the most aggressive media in urea synthesis columns and nitric acid plants where standard 316L degrades rapidly. 316Nb eliminates sensitization risk in welded heat exchanger assemblies. 316LMo (EN 1.4435) provides extra pitting resistance in chlorinated process streams.

Power Generation & Nuclear

347H  ■  347HFG  ■  316LN  ■  316Nb

347HFG delivers the maximum creep rupture strength demanded by ultra-supercritical steam turbine manufacturers. 347H is the widely accepted material for superheater and reheater tubing per ASTM A213/A376. 316LN structural components meet nuclear construction codes (RCC-MRx, ASME Section III) with its strength advantage over standard 316L.

Marine & Oil & Gas

Nitronic 50 (XM-19)  ■  316LN  ■  316LMo

Nitronic 50's PREN exceeding 38 and high strength make it the material of choice for propeller shafts, tiller pins, and subsea fasteners in continuous seawater immersion. 316LMo's elevated Mo content withstands the elevated chloride concentrations found in subsea wellhead equipment and offshore structural fittings.

Pharmaceutical & Food Processing

316LMo (1.4435)  ■  316LN  ■  304LN

EN 1.4435 (316LMo) is the European pharmaceutical industry's default material for API reactors, transfer piping, and CIP systems — its elevated Ni and Mo minimise pitting in saline cleaning solutions. 304LN provides the structural strength for large pressure vessels and storage tanks at lower material cost where Mo is not required.

Thermal Processing & Furnace Equipment

253MA (S30815)  ■  347H

253MA's cerium-enhanced oxide scale provides exceptional resistance to cyclic oxidation up to 1100°C, making it the first-choice material for radiant tubes, furnace rollers, burner nozzles, and heat-treatment fixtures. It offers a significant cost advantage over high-nickel superalloys for components not requiring creep strength above 900°C.

Quality System

Quality Assurance

Every batch is traceable from raw charge to finished product. Our quality framework exceeds the requirements of most international procurement specifications.

  • Mill Test Certificate — EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2

Every shipment is accompanied by a MTC issued in accordance with EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer-certified) or 3.2 (third-party countersigned). The certificate states chemical analysis, mechanical test results, heat number, and applicable standard.

  • Third-Party Inspection — SGS & Bureau Veritas

Independent inspection by SGS or Bureau Veritas is available at any stage of production or pre-shipment. Inspection scope is customisable: chemical check, dimensional survey, visual inspection, or full mechanical test witnessing.

  • Full Heat & Batch Traceability

Every bar, plate, and coil is stamped or tagged with a unique heat number. Our system stores and retrieves the complete production record: original melt chemistry, refining parameters, forge/roll schedule, heat treatment log, and final test report.

  • Non-Destructive Testing (UT / PMI / Hardness)

100% ultrasonic testing (UT) is standard on forged bars above 50 mm diameter per ASTM A388 / EN 10308. Positive Material Identification (PMI) by X-ray fluorescence is offered on all critical grades. Brinell and Rockwell hardness verification confirms heat treatment condition on each batch.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Special Austenitic Stainless Steel

What is the difference between 304LN and standard 304L stainless steel?

304LN is a nitrogen-enhanced variant of 304L. The controlled nitrogen addition (0.10–0.16 wt%) raises minimum yield strength from approximately 170 MPa (typical 304L) to 205 MPa, without any penalty to weldability, toughness, or intergranular corrosion resistance. This makes 304LN the preferred special austenitic stainless steel for pressure vessels and cryogenic storage tanks where the higher strength allows engineers to design thinner walls and reduce total weight. For structural code compliance, 304LN is listed separately in ASME VIII and EN 13445.

Is Nitronic 50 (XM-19) suitable for seawater and chloride environments?

Yes — and this is one of Nitronic 50's primary design advantages. UNS S20910 achieves a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) typically above 38, compared to approximately 25 for standard 316L. This substantially superior localised corrosion resistance makes it the standard choice for marine propeller shafts, rudder pintles, pump shafts, and offshore subsea fasteners in direct seawater contact. Its non-magnetic behaviour is an additional advantage in MRI and sensitive electronic installations.

What certifications and documentation come with your special austenitic stainless steel?

Standard documentation with every order includes: a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer-authorised) or 3.2 (third-party countersigned), chemical analysis by optical emission spectrometry (OES), mechanical test report (tensile and hardness), heat treatment record, unique heat number stamped on material, and a packing list with country of origin declaration. Additional documents available on request: third-party inspection report (SGS or Bureau Veritas), ultrasonic test report, PMI report, and NACE MR0175 compliance statement for sour-service grades.

Can you supply custom dimensions, cut-to-length bars, or rough-machined blanks?

Yes. Our in-house capability covers cut-to-length sawing, rough turning, and precision cylindrical grinding. Round bars are available in diameters from 6 mm to 800 mm and lengths up to 6,000 mm. Custom plate and flat bar dimensions are accepted. For special austenitic stainless steel grades with long production cycles (e.g., 310MoLN, 253MA), please contact us early to discuss scheduling. The minimum order quantity for custom production is 3 metric tons; in-stock standard sizes can be ordered from a single piece.

What is the typical lead time for 347HFG, and how is availability confirmed?

347HFG (EN 1.4988) is a specialist grade primarily produced to order. For in-stock sizes, delivery is within 7–15 business days ex-works Changsha. For custom dimensions or orders above 10 metric tons, production lead time is approximately 30 calendar days from confirmed purchase order. We will confirm exact stock levels, available dimensions, and delivery schedule within 24 hours of receiving your inquiry — no waiting for weekly stock reports.

What makes 253MA superior to other heat-resistant austenitic grades like 310S?

253MA (UNS S30815) differentiates itself through a unique combination of three elements: silicon (1.40–2.00%), nitrogen (0.14–0.20%), and rare-earth cerium (0.03–0.08%). Cerium preferentially segregates to the oxide layer and acts as a strong oxide former, creating a thin, exceptionally adherent, and self-healing protective scale that drastically reduces oxidation rates at temperatures up to 1100°C. Conventional 310S relies on chromium and nickel alone and cannot match this scale stability under cyclic thermal conditions. For furnace fixtures, radiant tubes, and burner components operating in the 900–1100°C range, 253MA delivers a significantly longer service life than 310S at a fraction of the cost of nickel-base superalloys.
