Duplex Stainless Steel Industry Applications
The dual-phase microstructure and high PREN values of duplex stainless steel make it indispensable across industries where standard austenitic grades cannot deliver adequate service life. The applications below illustrate the specific value duplex stainless steel delivers in each sector.
Oil & Gas
Duplex stainless steel is the material of choice for offshore risers, subsea manifolds, seawater injection lines, heat exchanger bundles, and high-pressure downhole tubing. Its resistance to hydrogen-induced stress cracking (HISC) and chloride SCC is critical in sour-service H₂S environments per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156.
Desalination & Water Treatment
Seawater desalination plants rely on super duplex stainless steel for membrane pressure vessels, high-pressure pump components, and pipework. The PREN ≥40 rating enables thin-wall designs saving weight and capital cost without sacrificing resistance to concentrated chloride attack in RO and MSF processes.
Chemical & Petrochemical Processing
Reactors, columns, heat exchangers, and piping handling chloride-contaminated acids and oxidizing media benefit from duplex stainless steel's broad resistance profile. Copper-bearing grades provide additional resistance to sulfuric and formic acid; silicon-bearing 3RE60 excels in bleach-plant and organic acid service.
Marine & Offshore
Structural components, propeller shafts, fasteners, and hull fittings on vessels operating in seawater need materials resistant to biofouling-accelerated pitting and crevice corrosion. Super duplex stainless steel achieves this at significantly reduced wall thicknesses compared with 316L, lowering vessel weight and fuel costs.
Pulp & Paper
One of the earliest industries to adopt duplex stainless steel, pulp and paper operations use it for digesters, bleach-plant equipment, washers, and process tanks exposed to acidic chloride-bearing bleach chemicals. The combination of SCC resistance and mechanical strength provides long maintenance-free service life.
Power Generation & FGD
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) absorber towers, condenser tubing, and heat recovery units in power plants face aggressive acid chloride condensate. Duplex stainless steel's pitting and erosion-corrosion resistance makes it the standard material for absorber liners, spray headers, and recirculation pump casings.
Food & Beverage Processing
Lean and standard duplex stainless steel grades are increasingly specified for food processing tanks, evaporators, conveyors, and CIP piping. Higher strength versus 316L allows reduced wall thickness, and the improved corrosion resistance in chloride-containing cleaning solutions provides a hygienically superior, longer-lasting surface.
Structural & Construction
Lean duplex grades (LDX 2101, SAF 2304, S32202) deliver roughly twice the yield strength of austenitic stainless grades, enabling slimmer sections for bridges, coastal facades, concrete reinforcing bars, and cladding systems. Reduced nickel content also provides more price-stable procurement versus nickel-sensitive austenitic grades.

Every order of duplex stainless steel is backed by documented quality control at every stage of production. Our ISO 9001 certified quality management system ensures that no consignment leaves our facility without a complete, verifiable documentation package that meets or exceeds your project specification requirements.
A full EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate accompanies every delivery, stating heat number, batch number, chemical composition by heat analysis, mechanical test results, heat treatment records, and ferrite content where applicable. EN 10204 3.2 countersigned certificates are available on request.
We fully support independent inspection by internationally recognised bodies including SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, and TÜV. Witness testing for chemical analysis, tensile, hardness, impact, and corrosion tests can be arranged during production or as pre-shipment inspection.
Ultrasonic testing (UT) per ASTM A388 or EN 10228-3, liquid penetrant testing (PT) per ASTM E165, and positive material identification (PMI) by XRF are performed on all critical product forms. Printed inspection reports are included in the shipping documentation.
Intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 Practice E (Strauss test), pitting resistance per ASTM G48 Method A/B, and NACE TM0177 stress corrosion cracking testing are available for specification-critical duplex stainless steel orders. CPT reports per ASTM G48 available for SAF 2507 and S32760.
Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001, covering all processes from raw material procurement through production, testing, packing, and delivery. Internal audits, corrective-action procedures, and supplier qualification protocols are applied consistently across all product lines including duplex stainless steel.
Ferrite content is measured and recorded on each duplex stainless steel batch to confirm the target 35–55% ferrite range per ASTM E1077 / ASTM A800. Deviations trigger material review and additional testing, ensuring consistent microstructure for corrosion-critical and sour-service environments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205, EN 1.4462) is the most widely used grade with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of approximately 35. It suits moderately aggressive chloride environments — process piping, offshore structural steel, pressure vessels — at operating temperatures below about 250 °C.
Super duplex SAF 2507 (UNS S32750, EN 1.4410) has a minimum PREN of 42, a higher yield strength (≥550 MPa vs. ≥450 MPa for 2205), and significantly better resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. It is engineered for the most demanding environments: seawater injection, deep-sea downhole equipment, and high-chloride chemical reactors. The trade-offs are higher material cost and more controlled welding procedures.
Every shipment is accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 as standard. This includes heat number, chemical composition by heat analysis, mechanical test results (yield, UTS, elongation, hardness), heat treatment records, and ferrite content where applicable.
EN 10204 3.2 certificates countersigned by an accredited third party (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, TÜV) are available on request. Additional documents such as UT inspection reports, PMI (XRF) results, corrosion test reports (ASTM G48, ASTM A262 Practice E), and NACE compliance statements can be included based on your project specification.
Yes. In addition to standard mill stock, we supply cut-to-length round bar, saw-cut plate, machined billets, disc forgings, and custom-profiled sections to drawing. Our 4,500–8,000-tonne hydraulic presses and GFM precision forging machines produce large-diameter blocks, stepped shafts, and flanging-quality discs in all major duplex stainless steel grades.
For non-stock items, a minimum order of 3 metric tons applies. Tolerances and surface finish are agreed at quotation stage. Send your drawing, material specification (grade, standard, form, dimensions, quantity) to info@fushunspecialsteel.com for a rapid technical review and quotation.
Standard grades including duplex 2205 (S32205), SAF 2507 (S32750), LDX 2101 (S32101), and SAF 2304 (S32304) are held in stock in commonly ordered sizes and ship within 7–15 business days following order confirmation and payment receipt.
Custom dimensions, non-stock grades (such as 2707 HD, 3207 HD, DP-3), or orders requiring special heat treatment, additional NDT, or third-party inspection typically carry a 20–30 calendar day lead time. Contact us directly for expedited scheduling on urgent requirements.
Yes. Super duplex grades are specifically designed for seawater service. SAF 2507 (PREN ≥42) and Zeron 100 / S32760 (PREN ≥40) have Critical Pitting Temperatures (CPT) exceeding 50 °C in 6% ferric chloride (ASTM G48), far exceeding the performance of 316L (typical CPT 15–20 °C). Both grades are approved under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service and widely qualified under NORSOK M-630.
For cathodically protected subsea environments, Hydrogen-Induced Stress Cracking (HISC) guidelines should be followed regarding austenite spacing and applied stress. Contact our technical team for project-specific recommendations.
For in-stock material, the minimum order is one piece or bar — no minimum tonnage for stock items. For custom-manufactured or non-stock dimensions, a minimum of 3 metric tons per line item applies.
Mixed-grade and mixed-form shipments are fully supported. Multiple duplex stainless steel grades can be consolidated into a single container, each clearly marked and documented with individual Mill Test Certificates. This is standard practice for procurement projects that cover multiple application areas simultaneously.
