  • ISO-V notch impact energy: ≥ 160J at -196°C (-320°F)
  • ISO-V impact strength: ≥ 200J/cm² at -196°C (-320°F)

Corrosion Resistance

Alloy N06059 demonstrates outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide range of aggressive environments, making it one of the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloys available:

Mineral Acids

  • Excellent resistance to sulfuric acid across a wide concentration and temperature range
  • Superior performance in hydrochloric acid compared to other Ni-Cr-Mo alloys
  • Exceptional resistance to nitric and phosphoric acids
  • Outstanding resistance to contaminated mineral acids

Localized Corrosion

  • Exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments
  • Superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, even in hot chloride solutions
  • Excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion due to low carbon and silicon content

Other Media

  • High resistance to oxidizing and reducing environments
  • Excellent performance in seawater and concentrated brines
  • Superior resistance to flue gas condensates containing sulfuric and hydrochloric acids

The extremely low carbon and silicon concentrations prevent grain boundary precipitation during hot forming or welding, enhancing the alloy’s resistance to intergranular corrosion. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content provides exceptional resistance to chloride ion attack in aggressive environments.

Applications

Due to its exceptional corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties, Alloy N06059 is ideally suited for numerous demanding applications:

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry

  • Plant components for organic chemistry processes with chloride-containing media
  • Components where catalytic systems on chloride basis are used
  • Multi-purpose plants in the chemicals industry

Fabrication

Alloy N06059 can be fabricated using conventional techniques with proper consideration for its properties:

Hot Forming

The alloy should be hot-worked in a temperature range between 1,180 and 950°C (2,156-1,742°F) with subsequent rapid cooling in water or air. Heat treatment after hot forming is recommended for optimal corrosion behavior.

Cold Forming

The material has a higher work hardening rate than austenitic stainless steels, which must be considered when selecting forming tools and planning processes. Intermediate annealing is necessary for major cold forming operations, and final solution annealing is required after cold forming of > 15%.

Heat Treatment

Solution annealing should be conducted at temperatures between 1,100 and 1,180°C (2,012-2,156°F), preferably at 1,120°C (2,049°F). Cooling should be accelerated with water or air to achieve optimum corrosion properties.

Machining

Machining should be performed in the annealed condition. Due to the elevated work hardening rate, use lower cutting speeds and maintain continuous tool engagement. Adequate chip depth is important to cut below the previously formed strain-hardened zone.

Welding

Alloy N06059 demonstrates excellent weldability using conventional processes including TIG, MIG/MAG, plasma, and electron beam welding. The use of pulse techniques is recommended for shielding gas welding processes. Proper cleaning and low heat input are essential for optimal weld quality.
