1.2340 MOD ESR Heat Treatment Guidelines
Annealing (Soft Annealing)
Heat slowly to 800-850°C, hold for adequate time (approximately 1 hour per 25mm thickness), then furnace cool at a rate not exceeding 20°C/hour to 500°C. Final cooling can be done in air. Expected hardness: ≤229 HB.
Stress Relieving
After rough machining, heat to 600-650°C, hold for 2 hours per 25mm of thickness, then cool slowly in furnace to 500°C before air cooling. This process relieves machining stresses before final hardening.
Hardening (Austenitizing)
Preheat in two stages: first to 450-500°C, then to 850-900°C. Austenitize at 1000-1040°C with adequate soaking time. Quench in oil, air, or polymer quenchant depending on section size. Air cooling is recommended for complex dies to minimize distortion.
Tempering
Temper immediately when the tool reaches approximately 50-70°C. Double tempering is required, with each cycle at 550-620°C for minimum 2 hours. Cool to room temperature between tempering cycles. For 48-50 HRC working hardness, temper at 580-600°C. The nickel addition enhances secondary hardening response.
