Ensuring a strong mechanical interlock with concrete is paramount. Our bars feature rows of crescent-shaped transverse ribs that meet the geometric criteria of BS 6744, Clause 10:
- Relative Rib Area (fR): Exceeds the minimum relative rib area (fRmin) specified in Table 6, which is the ruling criterion for bond performance.
- Rib Flank Inclination (α): Measured at ≥ 45°, ensuring effective load transfer without splitting the concrete cover.
- Transverse Rib Projection: Extends over at least 80% of the bar’s periphery.
These geometric properties are measured and verified in accordance with BS EN ISO 15630-1.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Grade 1.4362 compare to other duplex grades like 1.4162?
Both are low alloy duplex stainless steels listed in BS 6744 Table 5 for corrosion resistance to chloride ingress. The 1.4362 grade features a higher chromium (22.0–24.5%) and nickel (3.5–5.5%) content compared to 1.4162, along with a lower nitrogen range. This chemistry provides an enhanced level of corrosion resistance while still maintaining a very high strength. It is an excellent choice when the project requires a step above the leanest duplex in terms of chemical resistance, but without moving to a highly alloyed super-duplex.
Is 1.4362 rebar magnetic?
Yes. As a duplex stainless steel with a mixed austenitic-ferritic microstructure, 1.4362 is ferromagnetic. This is in contrast to standard austenitic grades like 1.4301 and 1.4311, which have very low magnetic permeability. Guidance on magnetic properties is provided in BS 6744 Annex C. This magnetic characteristic can be a practical advantage on-site for handling and separation.
What supplementary tests are mandatory for this duplex grade?
Per BS 6744, Clause 12.12, all duplex designations, including 1.4362, require additional testing beyond standard tensile and bend tests. For every batch, we perform the Charpy V-notch impact test on bars 16 mm and above (per BS EN ISO 148-1) and an intergranular corrosion test (per BS EN ISO 3651-2). These tests are mandatory to confirm the material is free from detrimental phases that could impair toughness or corrosion resistance, and their results are listed on the inspection certificate.
What are the most common applications for 1.4362 concrete reinforcement?
This alloy is widely specified for infrastructural and marine applications where a high level of chloride resistance is required to eliminate costly maintenance. Typical uses include bridge decks and support structures in coastal or cold climates (exposed to de-icing salts), sea water intake structures, quay walls, and foundations for chemical or water treatment plants. It is selected for structures with a design life of 100 years or more where proven duplex performance is needed.
