Cold Mill Work Roll Forgings

1. Specifications & Capability

FUSHUN METAL forges cold mill work rolls in 86CrMoV7 (1.2327) and Cr5-series steel, 300-900 mm body diameter, hardened to HRC 64 or higher. Work rolls are supplied as rough-machined blanks or finished rolls, ground to the strip mill’s specification.

The rolls are produced from ESR-refined ingots for maximum cleanliness, then through-hardened to a deep, uniform hardening layer that resists spalling and gives a long service life between regrinds.

Cr5 type User specification HRC 58-64

2. Components & Service Conditions

The cold mill work roll is the roll that actually deforms the strip in a cold rolling stand, running in direct contact with the strip under very high specific pressure. Its surface must be extremely hard to resist wear and indentation, yet tough enough to resist spalling under repeated contact fatigue.

86CrMoV7 is chosen for its high carbon content and chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloying, which together give the deep through-hardening and temper resistance needed for HRC 64+ work rolls. The ESR refining removes the non-metallic inclusions that would otherwise initiate fatigue spalling, and a high-temperature diffusion anneal evens out the carbide distribution before hardening.

Designation Standard Notes
86CrMoV7 / 1.2327 EN ISO 4957 Cold-work tool steel, preferred
Cr5 type User specification 5% Cr work roll steel
9Cr2Mo GB/T 1299 Reference only, not used in certification

Grade C Si Mn Cr Mo V
86CrMoV7 (1.2327) 0.82-0.90 0.15-0.40 0.20-0.40 1.70-2.20 0.20-0.40 0.10-0.20

The high carbon gives the hardness, while chromium, molybdenum and vanadium provide the hardenability, temper resistance and fine carbides that resist wear and spalling.

4. Manufacturing Process

Melting. FUSHUN METAL produces work roll steel by ESR after electric arc melting, which removes inclusions and gives the cleanliness that prevents fatigue spalling on the roll surface.

Forging & diffusion. The roll is forged on a 20/80 MN fast forging press with a high reduction ratio, then given a high-temperature diffusion anneal to homogenise the carbide distribution.

Hardening. The roll is quenched and tempered to HRC 64+, with the hardening depth and hardness uniformity controlled to the strip mill’s requirement.

Testing. UT to SEP 1921, hardness and hardening-depth verification, with full traceability.

5. Standards & Certification

Work rolls are supplied to EN ISO 4957 (tool steels) and SEP 1921 (ultrasonic testing of forgings), with inspection certificates under EN 10204 3.1. FUSHUN METAL holds ISO 9001 and AS9120B certification.

Related forgings: intermediate rolls and back-up rolls.
