1. Specifications & Capability
FUSHUN METAL forges pump shafts, valve stems and nitrided shafts in 17-4PH (1.4542 / S17400), PH13-8Mo (S13800) and nitriding steel 41CrAlMo7 (1.8509), 200-500 mm in diameter and up to 12 m long. 17-4PH and PH13-8Mo are precipitation-hardening (PH) stainless steels combining high strength with corrosion resistance; 41CrAlMo7 develops a hard wear-resistant case over a tough core.
The forging ratio is at least 4:1, with the grain flow oriented along the shaft axis for maximum fatigue resistance in rotating service.
| Grade / Condition | Rm (MPa) | Rp0.2 (MPa) | A (%) | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17-4PH, H1075 aged | 1000 min | 860 min | 13 | 31-38 HRC |
| PH13-8Mo, H1000 aged | 1410 min | 1310 min | 10 | 44-48 HRC |
| 41CrAlMo7, nitrided | 900-1100 | 700 min | 10 | 900+ HV surface |
Values follow ASTM A705, AMS 5629 and EN 10085; the aging or nitriding cycle and target hardness are agreed to the component specification.
2. Components & Service Conditions
FUSHUN METAL forges centrifugal pump shafts, valve stems and nitrided shafts for nuclear pumps, chemical valves and industrial rotating equipment. Service conditions combine high speed, bending stress and corrosive or erosive media.
The precipitation-hardening grades are chosen where corrosion resistance plus strength is required – 17-4PH for general pump service and PH13-8Mo for the highest strength and toughness in demanding aerospace and nuclear applications – while the nitriding steel is used where surface wear resistance matters most. Forging, rather than bar stock, is specified so the grain flow follows the shaft contour and internal defects are eliminated, which is critical in safety-related pump shafts.

PH13-8Mo is an ultra-clean grade with P max 0.010 and S max 0.008 for maximum toughness; its aluminum content enables the high hardening response that gives it strength above 17-4PH.
4. Manufacturing Process
Steelmaking. FUSHUN METAL melts these stainless and nitriding steels in an electric arc furnace with refining and vacuum degassing; PH13-8Mo is produced to ultra-clean limits for maximum toughness.
Forging. Shafts are forged with a minimum 4:1 reduction ratio on a 20/80 MN fast forging press, aligning grain flow with the shaft contour.
Heat treatment. 17-4PH and PH13-8Mo are solution treated and precipitation hardened to the ordered aging condition; 41CrAlMo7 is nitrided to produce a hard wear-resistant surface over a tough core.
Testing. Full-section UT, hardness and hardness-profile verification, with complete heat and process traceability.
5. Standards & Certification
Pump shafts and valve stems are supplied to ASTM A705 (17-4PH forgings), AMS 5629 (PH13-8Mo) and EN 10085 (nitriding steel), with inspection certificates under EN 10204 3.1. FUSHUN METAL holds ISO 9001 and AS9120B certification with complete heat and process traceability.
